This Training is Being Offered By: The Opioid Treatment Health Home Initiative and The New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center This course requires knowledge of “Basic Group Counseling,” skills through professional experience or completion of the course which identified evidence-based group treatment models, group dynamics, and the role of the group counselor. In a 6- hour virtual course, practical examples of treatment intervention applications that match the specific needs of special group populations will be presented. The term special populations can be defined as any sub-group of the dominant culture. For example, groups that are of a different culture, gender, age, sexual orientation, or composed of members with similar experiences (sexual and physical abuse; war; chronic illness), and emotional states (dual diagnoses, fear, anger, depression. . .). Interactive lessons to be processed in multiple break-out sessions, will provide an opportunity to integrate group leadership roles and skills that meet the course objectives. Additionally, there will be an opportunity for you to share a story about a difficult group treatment experience that you have had and would like receive treatment intervention feedback from myself and the class about. The intent of this self-paced online program is to provide an overview of the concepts of Compassion Fatigue, Traumatic Stress, Burnout as well as generate discussions of Self-Care Plans, individual Resiliency and Compassion Satisfaction in the workplace. As behavioral health clinical staff (case managers, residential staff, direct support workers), the current COVID-19 pandemic has placed an ever increasing burden on staff who work with this vulnerable, often traumatized client populations. Personal and psychological safety takes on a greater emphasis. It is hoped that this educational self-paced experience will better equip you to remain safe, while acquiring a more robust understanding of the nature of our work which requires the use of empathy and compassion. Ethical and liability issues will be reviewed concerning work with individuals, families and groups. Program topics will include: confidentiality and privacy, boundaries and dual relationships, conflicts of interest, negligent intervention, use of technology and social media, impaired professionals, consultation, supervision, client records and termination of treatment. Emphasis will be on strategies for preventing ethical dilemmas and liability risks. Curriculum meets chemical dependency certification.
